A positive side to getting captured

17 As for these four youths, God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. 18 At the end of the time, when the king had commanded that they should be brought in, the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. 19 And the king spoke with them, and among all of them none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Therefore they stood before the king. 20 And in every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his kingdom. Daniel 1: 17 – 20

I wonder if Daniel and his friends realized that God chose to give them great skills so they would rise to the top of the men who King Nebuchadnezzar placed in a three-year training program when he overtook Judah. Or maybe they were too distracted by the fact that they’d been captured or by the new life-style they were suddenly living. The reason I mention this is because I also wonder how often God handpicks special gifts for each of us and we don’t realize he’s doing it. Instead, we get distracted by the other happenings in our lives and don’t see or appreciate the great blessings he has bestowed upon us.

Dale and I are currently traveling internationally. I am sure God is giving us skills and knowledge we need on our journey to  get about, enjoy our time, and stay safe. I’m sitting here in a Starbucks (yes, they’re everywhere) putting together a list before we head off for our next destination: Dale’s phenomenal skill to navigate, my uncanny knack for opening up opportunities by talking to people wherever we go, our joint ability to agree upon almost everything we do at any point of any day.

What skills has God blessed you with lately to get through a sticky situation, stand out from others, or keep you safe?

The next time I find internet access I will post a story entitled, “Where in the world is Heather?” I’ll provide a photo essay of clues for you to use in determining where we are traveling. For those of you who know where we are, sshhhh, let’s see what the others guess.

Have a blessed day in the States.

  1. I have the “gift of Mammoth OCD”. No matter what the conditions, I must go to Mammoth and have a good time. Doesn’t matter that the conditions are storming and 15 degrees below freezing, I have to take a 5 hour trip to ski powder. This weekend there was no powder, but challenging conditions. I still had to go and have blast on steep double black diamond runs! Occasionally I meet wonderful people who have amazing skills with finding new opportunities.

    • Yes, that is definitely a gift for you. I’m impressed but not surprised you went last weekend. I’m guessing they are closed now and gearing up for mountain biking. Dale is looking forward to biking with you there later this month.
