13 I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 15:13 NLT
When Dale and I recently visited our friends John and Marisa in the Denver area, they told us about a family friend who is experiencing serious health issues. Being only twenty-eight and newly married, the woman and her husband were not yet ready to begin having a family. Recently, however, she was told that she had cancer in her uterus and a lymph node. Since her doctor didn’t know how aggressive the cancer was, he suggested immediate surgery rather than waiting to harvest some of her eggs. Deciding not to chance waiting, she went forward with the surgery. Her uterus and the infected lymph node were removed.
As it turned out, the cancer was very aggressive so she likely saved her life or at least prevented the cancer from spreading throughout her body by not waiting. She is now getting chemotherapy and later will have radiation.
There are two great blessings in this situation. First, the cancer was caught early and removed. Second, she is living out her faith throughout all of the ups and downs of the past few weeks. Rather than focusing on what she has lost (bearing children), she is focusing on what she has gained (being alive, God’s love and grace, having time with her new husband). By trusting God and his divine wisdom, she is filled with peace, joy, and hope despite her circumstances.
Prayer: Lord, please help me to trust you completely and to focus on your love and grace when I find myself in a deep valley. Please also heal and comfort this woman who is recovering from her cancer surgery, and help others to grow in faith through her example. Amen.
